Market Mapping

Map competitive landscapes, track emerging categories, and identify white spaces across any sector or vertical.

Quick Start

Use this skill when:

  • You are evaluating a new sector and need to understand who the players are
  • A portfolio company is asking about their competitive landscape
  • You want to identify underserved segments before they get crowded
  • You are preparing a sector thesis to present to the partnership
  • An LP has asked for your view on a specific market

How It Works

Define the sector with a natural language description: 'B2B climate tech companies building carbon accounting and reporting software for enterprise customers.' Market Mapping searches across Crunchbase, PitchBook, LinkedIn, and public news to build a comprehensive company list.

Each company is enriched with: last funding round, total raised, estimated ARR range, headcount, founding year, and a one-sentence product description. The full list is clustered into sub-categories using semantic similarity of product descriptions.

Category Analysis

For each sub-category, the skill identifies the apparent category leader based on funding, growth signals, and market presence. It then analyzes the competitive dynamics: Is this a winner-take-most market or fragmented? Are incumbents or startups dominating? What is the primary differentiation axis — price, features, or distribution?

Funding velocity charts show how capital has flowed into the category over the past 5 years, surfacing whether the category is still early, heating up, or already overcrowded.

White Space Identification

White spaces are identified by comparing the problem landscape (from customer interviews, forum analysis, and analyst reports) against the solution landscape. Segments with high customer search volume and low VC funding density are flagged as potential white spaces. Each white space is rated by estimated market size, technical feasibility, and founding team availability.
